How to determine the perfect length for your podcast episodes.

There is no one-size-fits-all ideal length because it really depends on a number of factors. There are podcasts that have 3-minute episodes, just enough time for listeners to get a quick break, and there are also podcasts that reach upwards of six hours long. Of course, most podcasts fall into the middle, but the sweet spot for us is 20-40 minutes. Here are 3 questions to ask yourself when deciding how long your podcast episodes should be?

1. What is your topic of discussion?

Will your topic warrant you speaking about it for an hour or can it be done in 20 minutes? Just remember to not make your episodes too short, because the goal is to leave your listeners with something meaty to hold them over until your next episode.

2. How much time can you invest?

Life can get busy, so the time you may have thought would work when you started podcasting may not work anymore. We all go through a stage where we want to do everything for everyone, but we simply can't and that's ok. Figure out what works for you and stick with it.

3. How often are you publishing episodes?

The norm is weekly or biweekly. In podcasting, quality always trumps quality so people would rather hear a 40-minute episode every week or two rather than 3 per week. You do not want your audience to grow overwhelmed by your long episodes and too-frequent upload schedule.
