Most people believe that you can’t make money if you’re a podcaster and that simply isn’t the case. Brands have included advertising in their marketing budget because they’ve noticed that consumers purchase items that have been advertised on podcasts. Now, there are two ways you can make money podcasting: advertising on your podcast or funneling your listeners into an existing business.
Companies are willing to pay for ad space on podcasts but they need to know if your show is consistently reaching people. To receive ad deals, you have to have a consistent listenership of 10k per episode. They want to ensure that your podcast will continue to have a high listenership after 30 days. Unfortunately, it’s hard to land ad deals if your listenership is low. If you aren’t able to get paid for advertising, look and see if the company has an affiliate program. Your listenership won’t necessarily matter because they’ll be focused on how many sales you can generate. In turn, you’ll promote their products and make them an advertiser.
Funneling is leading your audience into a business you own. This is very beneficial for podcasters with low listenership. When you have your audience buy from your business, you don’t have to wait on a one-time payment from advertisers. If you don’t have a business, think about an item you can offer to your audience that would be beneficial to them. It’s important to position your show for profit at the beginning, so you don’t have to wait to get paid until you hit an xxx amount of listens per episode.
